Cherokee County

Northwest of Atlanta and directly north of Cobb County lies Cherokee County, one of the metro area's fastest growing counties. Between 1980 and 1990, Cherokee's population increased 75 percent. The last decade brought even more growth. Population sits today at 140,000 with more newcomers on the way. Cherokee's growth can be attributed to its high quality of life. Cherokee County has a wide diversity of small industries and agribusinesses thrived on its green pastures. With the opening of Interstate 575, easy access to the City of Atlanta brought in new businesses and housing. From swim and tennis communities to golf and country clubs, housing options run the gamut. The interstate also provided easier access to Lake Allatoona, where thousands enjoy the best in water sports and recreation. It is one of the area's most popular attractions. The Cherokee County School System has responded to the population growth with an aggressive construction process. Nearly 1,500 students are entering the school system each year. There are also several different private schools to choose from. Northside Hospital-Cherokee is located in Canton and provides full service healthcare to Cherokee County residents. Over 40,000 patients are treated at the hospital each year. The county's native sons include two state governors, Joseph e. Brown and Joseph M. Brown; two Rhode Scholars, Eugene Booth and Dean Rusk (also former Secretary of State); and the world famous golfer, Bobby Jones; singer, writer and pianist, Lee Roy Abernathy, just to name a few.
